How to Book a Driving Test

book a driving testIf you want to book a practical test the first thing you need to make sure of is that you’re ready for the driving test. Many people fail tests through a basic lack of experience and practise. You will learn nothing from this. Going into it unprepared you will drive badly. This leads to shattered confidence and also, probably a negative impression of the test.

If you are with a professional driving instructor they should be able to tell when you’re ready. Ideally you should take at least one mock test with your own or another instructor. This will show how you’re likely to perform under a real test situation.

How to Book

The easiest way to make your booking is via the Gov.uk website at https://www.gov.uk/book-driving-test.

However, you can call the DVSA if you prefer. If you don’t have internet access you can book over the phone on 0300 200 11 22.

The cost of the category B car driving test is £62.

When booking your test you should give full information about any special needs you may have. They may allow you extra time for this if necessary. You will not pay any extra fees for this service.

Can I Take a Test in My Own Car?

If you plan on using your own car, that’s absolutely fine. Just make sure the vehicle is taxed, insured for you to drive on test and is roadworthy.

There are sometimes vehicles however which may be subject to safety recalls by the manufacturer. If yours is one of these you may need to produce documents proving the car has been properly checked. You can find an up to date list of these vehicles on the Gov.uk website . Or you can enquire about this when making your booking over the phone. If you fail to make these checks and turn up for test in a vehicle which has a recall notice on it, your driving examiner may not conduct your test.

If you want to know what happens during your test, your best source of information is ‘The Driving Test & How to Pass‘. This definitive guide will take you through the whole process. It also explains how the examiner will assess your driving, in addition to what they are looking for. Grab a copy and give yourself the best chance of passing!
